Pearce Votes Against Taxpayer Funded Abortions

Press Release

Date: Jan. 24, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Steve Pearce voted in favor of H.R. 7, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act, which prohibits federal funding from being used to purchase health care plans that cover abortions.

"It is our job, in Congress, to protect the rights and liberties of every American taxpayer. Unknown to many, Obamacare forced every taxpaying American, regardless of their conscience beliefs and faith, to foot the bill for elective abortion services. This is simply wrong, and flies in the face of our nation's freedoms and values."

Pearce continued by saying, "The Obama Administration interfered with our Constitutional protection of consciences and religious beliefs. The bill passed today reverses these damaging mandates, to ensure the values of all Americans are protected and honored. I'm proud to have cosponsored this important piece of legislation and will continue to fight for the protection of New Mexican values."

BACKGROUND:
H.R. 7 will prohibit premium tax credits and cost-sharing subsidies under the Affordable Care Act from being used to purchase health plans that cover elective abortion. The bill codifies vehicles like the Hyde Amendment that blocked federal funding for abortions piecemeal in each appropriations bill. Pearce later this week will participate in the March for Life event in support of pro-life values. The U.S. House of Representatives today voted 238-183 to pass H.R. 7.
